GOURD RACE RESULTS FOR 2007

Chesterton runners Sam Langley and Debbie Jaeger were the top male and female runners in the 2007 Gourd 5K Trail Race, while Ryan Kwiecinski and Karen Nagel finished first overall in the Gourd 10K.In the Master’s division (60 and older), Mike Wilson of Liberty Township took first at 25:13 in the 5K, and Fred Fleming of Chesterton took first in the 10K at 50:53.

The 9th annual Gourd Race was held Sept. 22, 2007, on a beautiful sunny morning at the Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve, Chesterton.

Langley finished first in the 5K with a time of 18:14. Jaeger was the top female runner at 21:52. In the 10K race, Kwiecinski finished first overall at 38:28. Nagel was the top female 10K runner, and third overall, at 39:58.

The top runners received a large hand-decorated gourd award, bookmark tag and a framed photo of themselves at the race. Runners who placed in the top three in each age division received small gourd awards and bookmark tags.

Winner of a box seat package at a Rail Cats game for the 2008 season was Crown Point resident Peggy Keller, who participated in the Gourd’s non-competitive walk. Winner of a Portage Township Live Entertainment Association Party Package for 10 was 5K runner Emily Cole of Chesterton.

The Gourd Race is sponsored annually by the all-volunteer, non-profit Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehab Center, which will soon open the area’s first wildlife rehabilitation center.

We are very pleased to report that in surveys, Gourd runners once again gave the race a high mark — an average score of 9.1 on a scale of 1 to 10. (This does not include the "100" score that one very happy runner gave us!)

One highlight of this year’s race took place during the awards ceremony, when Moraine Ridge board member and award announcer David Berger led the runners and walkers in a "Happy Birthday" song for 5K runner Thomas Lyp, who turned 9 on race day.

This year’s Gourd Race was much earlier than usual. After we had to move up our race in 2006 because of a conflict with another area race, we moved this year’s race up even more, into September, due to assorted other conflicts with races and schedules. But this year’s date still posed some conflicts, and our turnout was lower than usual. Nevertheless, by a 2 to 1 margin, runners surveyed urged us to keep the race in September. The second choice for runners was an October race date, though about an equal number also said the date of the race doesn’t matter to them. Only a few urged us to move The Gourd back to its traditional date in early November.

The Gourd Committee will carefully analyze all race date options and will strive to accommodate the wishes of the runners, while avoiding conflicts with other races.

This year’s Gourd Race was dedicated in memory of Moraine Ridge board member Gail Patrik and Gourd Race timer Patrick Rhodes. Both were dear friends to us at the Gourd, and both are deeply missed.

A huge thanks to our Gourd 2007 sponsors: Duneland Resale Shop, LEL/Coffee Creek Watershed Preserve, McAfee Animal Hospital, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network/Vic Volom, CLU, CFP, and Grieger’s Motors., all Golden Gourd sponsors; Jake’s Feed & Garden and Panera Bread, Bronze Gourd sponsors. Gift sponsors were Rail Cats and the Portage Township Live Entertainment Association.
