Gourd Results

As a 501(c)3 organization we depend on the public's help in operating our center and reaching our long term goals. Our biggest fundraiser has been "The Gourd", a 5K/10K race held annually  at the Coffee Creek Watershed Conservancy in Chesterton, Indiana. In addition, in 2004, we kicked off our major fundraising campaign to raise the capital and operating funds needed for our new center: an approximately 1200 square foot building with interior recuperating areas, outdoor runs/pens, and office space. All wildlife will be released upon their successful rehabilitation, either on-site or at another release site.

In the long-term, we hope to convert the residence on-site into a nature center that can be used for wildlife seminars, and wildlife research.

• Will You Help? :

Although we have come very far, we have much more work to do before our facility becomes the premiere wildlife rehabilitation center that we envision. We need your help to make it work! Please consider becoming a member of the MRWRC, donating useful items, or volunteering your time and/or expertise.

• Becoming A Donor/Member:

Yes, I support the Moraine Ridge Wildlife Rehab Center!

           - All of our donors receive our newsletters, invitations to special events and programs, and recognition on our "Donor Board". And above all, donors get the satisfaction of knowing they have helped give injured and orphaned native wildlife another chance at remaining wild, free and healthy.

• Donating Items:  Once the building is open --- Mid-Year of 2008

If you can't contribute financially at this time, there are other ways in which you can help. Maybe you have an old dog kennel or animal carrier. Maybe you have some old frozen meat or some extra dog/cat food that is expired or your pets do not care for. Please consider donating these items to out shelter. We are always in need of items to help defray our operating costs. Here is a list of typically useful items that you may have thrown away in the past:

• old towels / blankets        • old /expired pet foods

• newspapers                         • old /expired meat (for our birds of prey)

• fruits /vegetables               • coolers / plastic tubs or bins

• cleaning supplies               • office supplies

any medical supplies (ie. medical tape, gauze, triple antibiotic ointment, etc...)

                                                          - and just about anything else of use!

Just email us if you have something that you think we could use. If it is a big item(s) that you may have trouble hauling, just let us know. We will work with you and can most likely arrange for one of our Board Members to come to you and pick the items up!  Right now we can store few things, but later this year will have us with a working Center!!

• Donating Time (Volunteering):

We are always in need of volunteers. Wildlife rehabbers come from many different backgrounds and have many areas of expertise. Even if you aren't physically involved in rehabbing wildlife there are other ways you can help. Please consider volunteering your time or aiding us in your areas of expertise. A few volunteer opportunities are as follows:

• fundraisers                        • MRWRC product development

• promotions                        • facility maintenance

• volunteer coordination   • lawn/landscape maintenance

• outdoor pen maintenance

*** These are just a few. Let us know how you can help and we will will be happy to work with you.

Many of these volunteer opportunities are suitable for people of all ages. Just drop us a line and we can let you know when and where we could use your help!

• Becoming A Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator:

Another way you can help is to become a State Certified Wildlife Rehabilitator. As much as we would like to, we unfortunately can't give out wildlife to even the most responsible persons to be rehabbed. In most cases, in order to possess a wild animal at your residence you must have a Wildlife Rehabilitator Permit issued by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. These permits are obtained by filling out the proper applications and obtaining the signatures of people who may help you, including a veterinarian. Be sure when applying to see what you are actually applying for as there are different permits for Migratory Birds versus other non-migratory animals. The MRWRC Board of Directors will be happy to assist you in the application process in any way possible.

Unfortunately many laws in this area are changing, and educated people with good intentions are being turned away from helping our native wildlife. If you apply and aren't accepted the first time, please don't be discouraged. You are doing a good thing and we all can benefit from your help. Just let us know if there is something on your application we can assist with.

Please feel free to email us with any comments, suggestions, or questions. Just start by emailing the webmaster and your email will be forwarded to the proper party or person.

Thanks,
